Gavin working on Excelsior by Kate Batchelor

Gavin working on the ship in the sunshine whilst Kate Batchelor sketches.

Kate first met the trust last year when on board Deodar. Thanks to Kate for sharing this beautiful sketch of our Skipper working hard on the hull of Excelsior.

We are loving this image, and would love to start collecting any art work that has been produced of the crew, our voyage crew or the ship itself and we can share it with you all over the long winter months.

Thanks again Kate, @twitterpainter hope you can join us for a sail next season.

If you would like to find out more about voyages with Excelsior next season for you or your group, have a look at our sailing calendar or get in touch by email or call 0845 308 2323

Excelsior Wins Award from National Historic Ships

Category : News

Excelsior wins FLAGSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD

Excelsior, the historic Lowestoft sailing trawler has won a regional Flagship award from National Historic Ships UK.

The award has been given in recognition of the commitment that Excelsior gives promoting historic ships in her home cruising grounds and her 2016 Shipshape East Anglia programme, which extends across the North Sea and the South coast of England. A regional award of £250 has been made to support elements of this programme along with a Regional Flagship Broad Pennant.

The criteria for this award requires vessel owners to come forward with seasonal programmes which engage with the public through festivals, demonstrations, offering on-board cruises, quayside visits, educational programmes, participation in races and similar activities.

Martyn Heighton, Director of National Historic Ships UK said: “This award is designed to recognise vessels that are undertaking very exciting programmes of public events in their regions which raise the profile of historic vessels and the importance of our maritime heritage.”

Excelsior Trust Chair Jamie Campbell: “We are delighted that our commitment to maintaining part of East Anglia’s maritime heritage has been recognised by National Historic Ships. This prestigious award reflects the dedication by a small group to ensure Excelsior’s iconic red sails will continue to be a much loved sight off our coastal shores. Hundreds of people every year, both young and not so young enjoy their time aboard her and we are determined to carry on making her available to as many people as possible in years to come.”

Excelsior will shortly be leaving Lowestoft on 3rd May for a voyage to Norway. Berths are still available at a subsidised cost of £300 for seven days.

Bill Ewen

Bill Ewen, past skipper of Excelsior

We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden loss of past Excelsior skipper Bill Ewen. We will be posting thoughts and memories from friends and colleagues on the website and via social media.

Read Paul Thomas’ tribute to Bill here.

Carol Willis writes:-

Very sad to hear of Bill’s passing. He was Skipper when I and Chris Marchant (teachers at Benamin Britten High School) took 12 Year 10 students to Texel, Enkhuisen and Amsterdam for a week. As he worked so hard and played hard, I hope it was quick and not at all lingering because he would have hated that. Fond memories.
