Lowestoft Day Sail 200926
26 September @ 9:30 am - 5:30 pm| £75
Lowestoft Day Sail
Join EXCELSIOR, one of the last remaining Smacks still sailing out of Lowestoft, on a rare day’s sailing out of her home port. This near 100 year old traditionally rigged wooden ship with a length overall of 77ft will be taking some time out of her busy season, which see’s her visiting much of western Europe coastline, to allow you the opportunity to experience life at sea on this rare thoroughbred vessel.
Embarking and disembarking from the Heritage Quay pontoon on the South Pier, makes for easy access to and from the vessel, with Lowestoft Train Station under a ten minute walk away and plenty of parking locally. You will be able to enjoy a taste of this historic vessel – one of only 60 thought most historically import in the UK.
The day starts at 9.30am with everyone joining the ship, meeting the crew and other guests over coffee. Once everyone has arrived and safety briefings are complete you will get underway.
EXCELSIOR is a training ship, being very much a hands on experience for all those who wish to take part, from hoisting the sails, coiling ropes to helming, there is something for everyone to learn about and join in on.
Once all the sails are set, with our Skipper setting a course working with the wind and tide getting the most out of her 3,400 square feet of sail, it will no doubt be time again for a cuppa, and soon our exquisite cold buffet style lunch will be laid out for everyone to enjoy either above deck in the sunshine, or down below in our warm and cozy saloon.
After lunch we will start to make our way back to Lowestoft, with no doubt time for another cuppa and some cake on the way. Once again getting ‘all hands on deck’ to help drop and stow the sails, our experienced crew will teach you the authentic skills involved in working such an historic ship.
Having plenty of time to take in the scenery, chat with the crew and the other guests, you can learn more about EXCELSIOR and her expansive history as a fishing trawler, as well as learn about her recent occupations as a Sail Training vessel – providing life changing adventures at sea for young people from a variety of backgrounds. You can learn how you can get involved, be it to join on a future longer voyage, become a friend of the Trust, or help champion your own young person that you know to have such an opportunity.
Arriving back in Lowestoft ready to disembark by 17:30 you will wave good bye to our crew and get the chance to reflect on your day at sea.
OVER 14 Year old’s only – Life at sea can be tough, we want you to enjoy it still! We *can* make exceptions, so if you have someone who is super keen do get in touch.
